Sport NSW held its annual NSW Community Sports Awards at NSW Parliament House on Thursday 29th June, celebrating the extraordinary contributions volunteers make to community sport in NSW. NSW Touch Football had three nominees. David Baggio was nominated for Community Official of the year, Cory Wiseman was nominated for Young Official of the year and the Manly Women’s Premier League Team was nominated for Community Team of the Year. On the night, David Baggio was named Community Official of the Year for 2017 and was presented with the award in front of the NSW Touch Football Community at this year’s Blues Dinner. David is a Level 6 Referee as well as Presenter / Facilitator and Referee Coach. He officiated at local, state, national and international levels, including the Junior State Cup, Vawdon Cup, Youth Trans Tasman, Trans Tasman and the Touch World Cup. David regularly mentors many referees and assists them through their levels as well as working with elite referees to improve their skills. He was also once again ranked as the number one referee by the Federation of International Touch for 2017. Cory Wiseman’s nomination recognised his exceptional achievements as a young referee in the sport of touch. Cory is NSW Touch Football’s youngest ever State level referee at the age of 15. In 2016/17 Cory refereed at local, state and national levels as well as assisting with mentoring and training fellow young referees. Cory was unlucky not to receive the Young Official of the Year award, however with Cory’s bright future as a referee it is easy to see many more nominations and lots of awards coming his way. Manly Women’s Premier League Team won both the Vawdon Cup and State Cup, remaining undefeated in both for two years. Their entire roster was then selected for the NSW Scorpions at the 2017 Elite 8 National Championships where they won the competition, also undefeated. Manly was unlucky not to receive the award this year. They are most certainly a championship team and their success has helped the Manly Touch Association develop its development program, which is viewed as one of the best in Australia. NSW Touch congratulate Cory Wiseman and the Manly Women’s Premier League Team for their nominations and David Baggio on his award.
